Copenhagen’s origins as a commercial harbor are apparent from its original name Køpmannæhafn. World War II saw Copenhagen occupied by German troops along with the rest. When occupied forces failed the Royal Danish Navy sunk ships in Copenhagen Harbor to prevent them being used by the Germans.
